Mary (Maney) Easton and John Burns

Mary Easton was probably the child Maney Easton born to James Easton and Harriet Rutherford on 7 October 1832 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire.1 From Mary's stated ages on other occasions this matches up, otherwise, unlike all her other siblings Mary's birth or baptism wasn't registered, nor does she appear on the 1841 census. Given her obvious placement in this family, it seems highly likely that Mary is Maney Easton but she chose to adopt the more standard variety of forename.

Mary married John Burns on 22 March 1853 in Lime House, London, Middlesex, England. John Burns was born on 24 February and baptised on the 29 March 1826 in Lilliesleaf, the son of James (William) Burns and Janet Davidson.2 Mary and John had eight children between 1855 and 1876.

Their first child was Harriet Burns, born about 1855 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. No birth or baptism entry has been discovered to date but Harriet appears in the 1851 census. The next two children were born in Galashiels. Jessie Davidson Burns was born 3 November 1858 in Stirling Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire,3 and James Easton Burns was born 11 January 1861 in Union Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire.4

For the 1861 census the Burns family were living at 10 Union Street, Galashiels in Selkirkshire with the following details included on the census return.5
