Nichols, Nicholls, Nicholas and Knight

The fate of the children of Isabella Rayner completes the story of her relatively short life of 54 years. The variations in the surname seemed to have ultimately reflected real divisions within the family and it certainly made the effort to trace the family's movements and origins so much more difficult. Isabella and William's eldest child George Nichols married Anne Cleaver on 10 August 1872 in Broadmarsh, Tasmania. For some reason the registration is under the name George Nicol Lake.1 Annie was born in 1854 in Forest Creek, Victoria, the daughter of Louis Llewellyn and Bridget Cleaver (also known as Bridget Briscoe).2 George and Anne would go on to have 8 children while living in the Broadmarsh area. John Henry Nicholls Jnr., age 27, married Annie Keane (or Cane), age 20, on 17 October 1876 in St. Joseph's Church, Hobart, Tasmania. He was a gardener and she was a servant. Bernard McCauley and Marg Connelly were witnesses.3 Annie was born on 24 June 1857 in the Franklin district, the eldest daughter of William Cane and Ellen Curry, both having arrived in the colony as Irish convicts.4 John and Annie would remain living in Hobart and go on to have seven children. Esther Alice Knight married Garibaldi Geeves on 25 June 1885 in New Town, Tasmania.5 Garibaldi was born on 7 July 1861 (as an un-named male) in the Franklin district to Stephen Geeves and Lois Hickman.6

GEEVES—KNIGHT.—On June 25, at the Congregational Church, New Town, by the Rev. Geo. Clarke, Garibaldi, third son of Stephen Geeves, of Geeves Town, to Esther Alice, second daughter of the late Joseph Knight, of Hobart.7

The death notice provides final confirmation of John Nicholls as the son of William Nicholls and Isabella Rayner. John's sister Anna Nichollas died a year and a day later on 15 February 1917 in 53 Davey Street, Hobart.19 The death notice in the paper used her father's adopted Quaker surname of Nichollias:

NICHOLLIAS. - On February 15, 1917, at her late residence, 53 Davey-street, Hobart, Annie M. Nichollias, aged 75 years. (Private interment on the 16th February, at Cornelian Bay Cemetery.)20
