Forth (1833)

The following list of passengers aboard the second voyage of the Forth to Van Diemen's Land was seeded from information available in the newspapers of the day, and from the Van Diemen's Land Company shipping return.

The Forth returned to England after her voyage in 1832, arriving there in February 1833 as reported in the Launceston news in July 1833:

The Forth, Captain Robertson, arrived on the 12th of February: Our private letters inform us that the latter vessel had a very tempestuous passage. On the 26th November, in lat. 49. 7 S. long. 49. 20. W., she was struck by a heavy sea which did considerable damage, and one of the crew was washed overboard; and in lat. 48. 46. N.14. 46. W. long.: her main-mast was shivered by lightning. We are happy to add that, notwithstanding, her cargo was landed in the the finest possible order. She is again chartered by: the Van Diemen's Land Company for Circular Head and Launceston; to sail on the 1st of May. 1

The ship's arrival back in Circular Head has not been isolated to date. Presumably she did sail from London on 1 May 1833:

...the Van Diemen's Land Company's chartered ship Forth of Alloa, of 600 tons burden, Captain James Robertson, sailed from the London Docks, with a general cargo, eight cabin and upwards of forty passengers, for the establishment formed by that company at Circular Head, from whence she proceeds onwards to Launceston, which port within these few years has risen rapidly into commercial importance. 2

The earliest account found has the vessel arriving in Launceston on 13 November 1833.

The Forth, Capt. Robertson, arrived in Port from London and Circular Head, yesterday. We have only space to give the names of passengers this week :— In the cabin ; Miss Maria Head, Miss Mary Solomon, Messrs. Robert Massie, Philip Oakden, John Main, Mervyn Mann, Wm. Fletcher. In the steerage ; Robert Bell, Wm. W. Williams, Marianne Williams, Harriet Lloyd, Jonathan S. Waddel, William Boden, Elizabeth Boden, John Henny, Frederick Wigan, August Lackmenn, Barnard Lloyd, Thomas Lloyd, Fanny Lloyd, Thomas Lloyd. Twenty-seven passengers were landed at Circular Head. 3

Margaret Johnstone was baptised on 23 November 1843 with a recorded date of birth of 5 November 1832, so presumably Margaret was born just before the family arrived in Van Diemen's Land.34

DEATH OF MR. R. MASSIE - We have to record the death of an old and much respected resident of Hay, who for many years has been familiar to us all, Mr. Robert Massie. He had been ailing and in a rather feeble condition for some time, and during the last two months he had been too unwell to leave the house. The sad event had been almost daily expected for the last week or two. but he lingered on until Tuesday morning when he passed quietly away. Mr. Massie was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on 26th October 1809. At an early age he was apprenticed to the civil engineering. Shortly after his apprenticeship had expired he joined the Van Diemens Land Company as an engineer, to erect all the machinery sent out by the company, and to lay out their farm, etc. After leaving the services of this company he went with Mr. Anderson to Westernport, and they took up the first station in Victoria. This was in 1837. At that time the law did not allow those taking up land to cultivate it, and after they had sunk everything in clearing and cultivating, the Government swooped on them and they had to either buy the land or leave it, and they choose the latter. After this Mr. Massie went to Deep Creek, and then to Lancefield, and carried on farming operations. When the gold fever broke out he went to Guildford as mining manager and engineer where he lived a considerable time and shared the varying success of those who speculated in mining. After leaving the goldfields he came to Hay where he resided up to the time of his death. He leaves a widow and eight children, three sons and five daughters, all of whom are married. 55

Philip Oakden (1784-1851), merchant, banker and social worker, was the son of Philip Oakden of Stydd, Derbyshire, England, and his wife Mary, née Huerdd. After a business failure in London he went to Hamburg in 1816 as a commission merchant in partnership with Osmond Gilles and by 1827, when he revisited England, he was able to repay all his creditors, who presented him with plate worth £100 inscribed with their testimony to his honour and moral rectitude. He finally left Hamburg in 1829 for Liverpool, where he joined the Wesleyan Society. After the colonial success of other Hamburg merchants he emigrated to Van Diemen's Land in the Forth in November 1833, and next year was elected to the board of directors to organize the establishment of the independent Tamar Bank in Launceston.
