Henry Brock and Margaret Marshall

This page is in development. Information that has not yet been confirmed with a source is in red. It was developed from information provided by Helen Brown, a Brock family descendant. Henry Brock and Margaret Marshall were the parents of potentially fourteen children, a number of whom emigrated to Australia in the early decades of the nineteenth century. It has been suggested that Henry was the son of John Brock (also known as John Broak) and Mary Robertson who had married on 24 April 1751 in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland.1
There is a record of the christening of a Henry Brock on 19 December 1768 in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Henry Or John Brock and Mary Addie Or Robertson.2
Henry married Margaret Marshall on 20 March 1794 in Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland. Margaret Marshall was christened on 19 September 1773 in Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland, the daughter of Alexander Marshall and Marion Walker.3
Henry and Margaret were tenants on Overton farm (also styled Overtoun) in Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland, near Linlithgow.

West Lothian (or Linlithgowshire until 1921) is a county in the south of Scotland, bounded on the north by the Firth of Forth, on the east and south-east by the county of Edinburgh, on the south-west by Lanarkshire, and on the west by the county of Stirling. It is about 21 miles in length and 12 miles in extreme breadth, comprising an area of 112 square miles or 71,680 acres. It is the western division of the ancient province of Lothian and since 1974 has been part of the region of Lothian.4

Kirkliston is in the east of the county and was in antiquity home to the Liston family, thus the name of the parish, Kirkliston means the church or domain of the Listons. Kirkliston was known in former times as Temple Liston so Kirk was an obvious replacement of that term.5
The Overton farm was part of the Hopetoun Estate, owned by the Earl of Hopetoun (later the Marquess of Linlithgow).6
As a tenant farmer Henry Brock would have paid an annual fee to the Earl, either as money or a combination of money, labour and produce. A tenant farmer, while not a landowner, was still a step above a standard farm labourer.
